Memorable is the word most often used to
describe our Field to Fork dinners. Memorable for the weather
which has run the gamut from torrential rain or a clear full
moon lit evening. Memorable for the meals which are fresh from
the farm and exquisitely prepared by a talented chef. Memorable
for the company – farmers who grew the food, neighbors who
wouldn’t miss a night out at the farm and new friends visiting
for the first time. And finally, memorable for the scenery –
beautiful Jersey cows marching down the lane to graze lush green
grass, an adorable Border collie herding cows and Meadow larks
singing their trademark song.
The idea that we could host an elaborate
dinner for 100 people in our field came from our friend Maria
Lefrancois. After dismissing the notion, we embraced it and
started planning the first dinner in August, 2008. Although the
weather was wet and windy that year, guests were thrilled to
enjoy a delicious five course meal in a barn. Since our dream of
dining in the field was not fulfilled, we planned a second
dinner and the weather could not have been more perfect. The sky
was blue and a harvest moon shone on diners during dessert of
homemade pies.
Not wanting to profit from our friends,
we decided the dinners would be a fund raiser for an appropriate
cause. Dinners have raised between $1,400 and $2,000. The
designated charity is announced in the invitation and
approximately $20 from each ticket is donated.
We work closely with our caterer to plan
the event and the menu. No outside company is involved. The menu
is created around availability of local foods. Last year
everything except the balsamic vinegar was sourced locally!
The dinners are so magical that after
each marvelous evening our thoughts turn to planning the next
Field to Fork dinner. Stay tuned!
